State laws prohibits the "normal guy" from getting on the ballot, in essence requiring a candidate to be part of the system before they can be elected. Each state may choose its own requirements, but in general, to be placed on the ballot, you must be part of an existing party or come up with money and/or a large amount of specific signatures in a defined time frame.

The totals for this effort would require tens of thousands of dollars and over a million signatures, and not just any signatures. For example in California for 2004, I would have had to gather 153,035 names on a petition between April 23rd and August 6th. Some states require these signatures to be only of people who did not vote in a primary. Some states require a certain percentage of each of these votes come from each county. All of these restrictions form quite a formidable barrier IF you are able to find out all the information.

So my strategy must go to gaining ballot access where possible, and rely on the write-in vote in the remainder of states. This method requires a few thousand dollars and roughly 570 signatures - people who will be my electors from each state.
